ELA instruction is
based around 5 components: reading, writing, language, speaking and listening. The
reading portion of the standards focuses on the appropriateness of text
complexity for each grade and the ability to make sense of text and connect it
to other texts. The writing portion of the standards focuses on
students' ability to successfully write argumentative pieces, informative
texts, and narratives. The focus is on these skills in addition to the
traditional teaching of the writing process. The speaking and listening
portion of the standards focuses on students' ability to make presentations
which will ultimately prepare them for college and careers. The
language portion of the standards focuses on grammar and the appropriate
use of academic vocabulary.

These 5 components are
intertwined so that each year students are expected to gradually have a more
sophisticated and deeper understanding or each and all. The importance and
continuity of these components are based around the other subjects as well As
students progress in their studies, the other subjects become more challenging
expecting students to have practiced (essentially, mastered) skills on the
various components through the work accomplished in ELA so they may effectively
accomplish and succeed in their work with other subjects when the time comes.
You provide an in depth reflection of ELA instruction, I like your incorporation of a diagram, it brings a deeper understanding, great job
ReplyDeleteHello Jerry,
ReplyDeleteAm really glad that am able learn from someone like you who have being the education system, this really makes my learning process even more interesting. I really love the visual that you implement in your post. As ELA is implemented in each students learning process, as you mean each year students are expected to increase there level of understand. This is really a great aspect of ELA and the Common Core standards. This way by the time students are ready for high school, they should adequately prepared to apply their knowledge gain over the years.
What a great diagram! Thank you for making a great visual presentation emphasizing the fundamental shifts in the common core ELA standards. Specifically I like to point out the focus how teachers should use instructional pedagogy to address academic vocabulary (words that appear in a variety of content areas), which is closely related to text complexity and inextricably connected to reading comprehension. These standards will help students grow their vocabularies through a mix of conversation, direct instruction, and reading. They ask students to determine word meanings, appreciate the nuances of words, and steadily expand their range of words and phrases and extend across reading, writing, speaking, and listening. :)
